A MAN has pleaded guilty to three offences. Nicholas Hufton, of Duke Street, Whitehaven, appeared at North and West Cumbria Magistrates Court on Friday (March 5), charged with damaging an internal and external door, assaulting a police officer, and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. On February 4, the 40-year-old damaged a £500 door, assaulted a police officer by beating him, and grabbed and threw a Patterdale Terrier puppy, causing it to hit its head on a door. Hufton s guilty plea was taken into consideration by the court, and he was instructed to pay a total of £325 compensation, a £95 victim surcharge, and £85 court costs – a total of £505.
Bridge Road, Barrow AN electric scooter rider has been found guilty of driving without a licence or insurance. Octavian Alien Ciocan was spotted by police riding the scooter on Bridge Road in Barrow on October 1 last year. The 48-year-old, of Hempland Avenue in Barrow previously denied the offence after claiming he was told no licence or insurance was required when he bought the scooter, which is not correct. North and West Cumbria Magistrates Court found him guilty of both the charges following a trial today. For driving without insurance, district judge John Temperley fined the defendant £660. Ciocan was also handed six penalty points on his provisional licence for driving a vehicle without insurance.

A woman accused of causing an elderly pedestrianâs death by driving without due care and attention in Penrith has appeared in court.
Kathleen Boddy, who was aged 77, suffered serious injuries when she and an Alfa Romeo vehicle were in collision in the Southend Road area close to the town centre on October 14 2019.
Mrs Boddy was transported by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle but died four days later.
Police said at the time they had been called to the report of a collision between a pedestrian and a car just before 11.50am, and in the aftermath issued a public appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
