City of Wetaskiwin Fire Services have partnered with the Alberta Society for Firefighters Abroad (ASFA) to keep used fire equipment and clothing out of the landfills and put them into the hands of firefighters who really need them in Paraguay.
In Canada, fire equipment has a finite lifespan before it must be replaced according to regulations. Much of this equipment still has a lot of useful life left in it but would have gone to the landfill if not for the efforts of Uwe Kurth with the ASFA. Uwe a former Wetaskiwin Fire Services member who last served in 2012 is spear-heading this initiative. The society works with fire departments across the province to salvage and ship still useful helmets, boots, and turnout gear including fire resistant coats and pants. Wetaskiwin Fire is also sending fire hoses and fire nozzles in this shipment.
