The species was identified by the members of ZSI and CUBE and the team comprises Vasanthakumar, Senthilkumar Palanisamy, Vinny R Peter, and Radheshyam M Sharma.
COIMBATORE: During a field visit in 2015, a researcher from the Western regional centre of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Durai Vasanthakumar and his team spotted a small bulge along the middle vein of one of the leaves of ziziphus mauritiana (Indian jujube) near Singanallur lake, Coimbatore. Little did they know that they had identified a new species, which would later be named after them.
While collecting and preserving the leaves with moist cotton, they spotted a pupa beneath the leaf tissues. After comparing and conducting studies on multiple similar insects, the team suspected it to be a new species in 2017. They later confirmed it with the help of an Australian expert.

NMCG lays emphasis on conservation of wetlands ANI | Updated: Feb 03, 2021 18:19 IST
New Delhi [India], February 3 (ANI): A three-day-long seminar emphasizing the conservation of wetlands in the country was concluded in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The event, organised by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and India Water Foundation, was virtually joined by several experts and environmentalists. They delivered viewpoints on the rejuvenation of wetlands in the country.
The Executive Director (Finance) at NMCG Rozy Aggarwal said, “Wetlands act as a lung to the rivers and the ecology of the river ecosystems, but in the past because of rapid development these wetlands are shrinking. So, the world should focus on the need for conserving the wetlands and keeping them alive and restored for maintaining the health of the river and the ecology”.
