Mounds of trash and junk are piled on the curbs along the streets and alleys of Wheeling Island for a massive cleanup effort. Teams of city crews have been working all week to remove the junk in a one-time neighborhood improvement blitz that was organized in the manner of a flood disaster cleanup effort.
WHEELING A one-time cleanup blitz in Wheeling Island looked like a great idea on paper, but the key to its success pivoted on participation by Island residents. Several days later, city crews are still loading up and hauling away heaps of junk in what has turned out to be a monumental community movement toward neighborhood improvement.

Residents of Ohio County still have several chances to take advantage of spring clean-up sites that will pop up throughout the area until May 1.
Eight sites will be available in the five days left for the events the West Liberty Christian Church parking lot and Clearview Community Center on Saturday, the Patterson Ballfield and Bethlehem Ballfield parking lots on April 20, the Valley Grove Community Center and Triadelphia Town Building on April 24, the Wheeling Island Marina parking lot on April 27 and the Stone Church Volunteer Fire Department on May 1.

A big, three-day clean up blitz this month on Wheeling Island begins this weekend, as island residents are asked to neatly place all trash and various items on the edge of their properties along the regular trash route, where city crews after Sunday will be using a flood protocol disaster cleanup to rid the neighborhood of junk.
WHEELING A major, multi-day cleanup effort on Wheeling Island is slated to begin this weekend, and all Island residents are urged to participate.
Ward 2 Councilman Ben Seidler said the city of Wheeling’s Operations Department has committed to help make this year’s cleanup bigger and better than ever. In order for it to be a success, however, residents have to participate.
