Murder case against ex-cop in Floyd s death goes to the jury MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The murder case against former Officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd went to the jury Monday in a city on edge against another round of unrest like the one that erupted last year over the harrowing video of Chauvin with his knee on the Black man s neck. The jury of six white people and six people who are Black or multiracial began deliberating after nearly a full day of closing arguments in which prosecutors argued that Chauvin squeezed the life out of Floyd last May in a way that even a child knew was wrong.

Apple signals return of right-wing free speech app Parler - New Delhi Times - India s Only International Newspaper

April 20, 2021 Share Apple said it has reached an agreement with the right-wing social app Parler that could lead to its reinstatement in the company’s app store. Apple kicked out Parler in January over ties to the deadly Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol. In a letter to two Republican lawmakers in Congress, Apple said it has been in “ substantial conversations ” with Parler over how the company plans to moderate content on its network. Before its removal from the app store, Parler was a hotbed of hate speech, Nazi imagery, calls for violence (including violence against specific people) and conspiracy theories.

Right-wing app Parler may soon return to Apple App Store

Advertisement Parler said it has implemented “several new safeguards” designed to detect posts that “would not fall within the protections of the First Amendment,” but added that it did not make broad policy changes. “While the App Store version of Parler will prohibit some posts that Parler allows, those posts will still remain visible on the web-based and Android versions of Parler,” the company said in a statement. The 1st Amendment does not apply to private companies such as Parler; it prohibits the government from making laws that impede free speech. But this has not stopped people from saying that social media companies violate their free speech rights by moderating content, or from “free speech” apps such as Parler from popping up to fill a perceived void of censorship-free discussion sites.

AP News in Brief at 12:04 a.m. EDT by The Associated Press Last Updated Apr 20, 2021 at 12:14 am EDT Out of sight but centre stage, jurors weigh Chauvin’s fate MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The jurors who sat quietly off-camera through three weeks of draining testimony in Derek Chauvin’s murder trial in George Floyd’s death moved into the spotlight Tuesday, still out of sight but now in control of verdicts awaited by a skittish city. The jury of six white people and six people who are Black or multiracial was set for its first full of deliberations. The jury, anonymous by order of the judge and sequestered now until they reach a verdict, spent just a few hours on their task Monday after the day was mostly consumed by closing arguments in which prosecutors argued that Chauvin squeezed the life out of Floyd last May in a way that even a child knew was wrong.

The announcement comes after Apple responded to a letter from Senator Mike Lee and Congressman Ken Buck by informing them that Apple had agreed to allow Parler back onto the App Store. Parler’s re-launch on the App Store comes after several months of productive dialogue with Apple and new information that Parler provided to the public and Congress to demonstrate that the Company has always prohibited incitement and Parler had been unfairly scapegoated for the events of January 6th.
