[ sirens ] and here we are again. the city is on edge as it prepares for a weekend of more possible protests one year on. the state s governor has even gone as far as declaring a state of emergency. that s right, and police are stepping up security. they are closing roads ahead of the anniversary of violence in that city, the day that one person who was protest being the white nationalists was killed. on sunday, white nationalists and right wing groups plan to come together in washington for what they call a white civil rights rally. cnn s randi kaye reports. reporter: this was the scene one year ago this weekend in charlottesville, virginia. dozens of white nationalists carrying torches and shouting racist chants.
meanwhile, a white civil rights rally is set for this weekend marking the first anniversary of that unite the right event and this time it will be across the street from the white house. joining me now is investigative the author of everything you love will burn. he spent several years embedded with white nationalist groups and was there during the violence in charlottesville. you write in your book, vegas, that charlottesville was terrible and inevitable. why? well, it was the clashing of two sides who had been at each other s throat for a long time. for years leading up to charlottesville there had been far right rallies across the country. antifa had been there and counterprotesters had been there so it was inevitable that these two groups would clash together and charlottesville was that time and place. the president said there was violence on both sides. both sides were to claim.
group of about two dozen, maybe a little bit more white nationalists arrived on a metro train from the foggy bottom metro station and escorted by police through the streets of washington d.c.. 23rd street over towards pennsylvania avenue and then that is where they stayed. as they were being escorted through the streets, the group, the counter protesters around them, the group got bigger and bigger and bigger. and it really started to snowball. there is a little bit of a commotion once they got to the turn to get to pennsylvania avenue because the only one the police wanted to let through war these unite the right two protesters. they got there and they stayed on pennsylvania avenue even though they were pretty close to pennsylvania avenue and lafayette park which had a permit to occupy for two hours for a rally that they were calling a white civil rights
the right rally in the nations capital. how does it look so far, peter? reporter: the night the right two white civil rights rally as it was billed was very lightly attended. if you look behind us here, there are thousands of people with a variety of different signs and causes represented. but they have been told apparently in the past two minutes that because of severe weather in the area, some thunder and lightning, all of this is being shut down. thunder and lightning came through about 20 minutes ago. no one really left but it has started raining steadily and now you re starting to see folks leaving because not everyone has umbrella. apparently one of the camera positions the police said they have five minutes in the have to clear out. it may be the end of what was at times, a chaotic scene. the unite the right rally started essentially when the
