In addition to upgrades to the Utqiagvik Airport, the state plans to lay down the first paved road in Alaska s northernmost community this summer.
Ahkovak Street, which runs parallel to the Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport, is on the list for this year s State of Alaska Department of Transportation improvements. The project, which is expected to cost more than $7 million, includes raising the roadway, improving drainage and paving the street. The improvements will come at a cost this summer, however, for motorists traveling through the area. Portions of the street will be closed with detours and single-direction traffic while construction is underway. The project is 90% funded by the Federal Highway Administration with a 10% state match and is expected to be completed by September.
