Resurrecting a 1993 Tom Clancy book, the filmmakers decided to change just about everything except the title and Clancy heroine John Clark.
Set in the present and starring Michael B. Jordan, âWithout Remorseâ is the origin story of Clark (who is known as John Kelly through most of the film), an elite Navy SEAL on a mission with his team in Aleppo, Syria.
Instead of battling Syrians, the SEAL team discover that their opponents are Russians. Three months after the SEALS return home to America, they are targeted by Russian terrorists who decimate the members of the SEAL unit and kill Kellyâs pregnant wife Pam (Lauren London).

Stefano Sollima directs this screenplay by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name. In Syria, Navy SEAL John Clark (Michael B. Jordan) and his elite team rescue a CIA operative taken hostage by Russian ex-military forces. A few months later, in apparent retaliation, a squad of Russian assassins comes after Clark and murders his wife, Pam (Lauren London), driving the highly trained soldier to seek revenge. What Clark uncovers, however, is an international conspiracy that could engulf the U.S. and Russia in an all-out war. This is the first of a two-part series, with Rainbow Six to follow. (109 min.)

Without Remorse, involves not Ryan but a secondary character in the Ryan saga, John Kelly. Kelly (Michael B. Jordan) is a Navy Seal who, as the film opens, is on a top-secret mission in Syria alongside fellow Seal Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith) to rescue a hostage from what they are told are Syrians, but wind up being Russians.
