Brian Higgins pleaded guilty on Wednesday, setting the stage for the upcoming jury trial of the last four defendants accused of plotting to kidnap the governor of Michigan prior to the 2020 presidential elections.

One of the five defendants involved in a plot to kidnap governor Gretchen Whitmer in Antrim County has changed his plea to guilty.

His guilty plea puts pressure on the other defendants to seek deals ahead of their high-profile state terrorism trial scheduled for August.

The decision to hear the cases in a single trial brought objections from defense attorneys, says Mardi Link, enterprise reporter for the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

(The Center Square) – More than two years after the alleged plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was foiled, criminal cases against alleged perpetrators are still working their way through the court system.

The Antrim County Circuit Court approved two motions in the trial for five coconspirators in the plot to kidnap and potentially kill Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Adam Fox and Barry Croft, Jr. were sentenced to 16 years and 19.5 years, respectively, in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Tuesday and Wednesday for the roles they played in plotting to kidnap and kill governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.

Barry Croft was sentenced Wednesday to 19.6 years in prison and five years of supervised release.

Three Michigan men were given sentences ranging from seven to 12 years in prison for their role in providing support and participating in the plot to kidnap and kill Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the summer and fall of 2020.
