‘Significant Milestone’ as application for Technological University submitted – Cummins
30th April 2021 - Senator John Cummins
A significant milestone has been reached by the application to establish a Technological University (TU) for the South-East and must now be examined without delay, Fine Gael Senator John Cummins has said.
Senator Cummins was speaking after his Fine Gael colleague, Minister Simon Harris confirmed he will carefully consider the application and the requisite reports and views on it before a decision is reached.
“This is a very significant milestone for the application to establish a TU for the South-East, which has been worked on extensively for many years. I want to acknowledge the tireless work of staff, management and students who have been involved in the process across numerous working groups,” Senator Cummins said.
Application for the Technological University of the South East
The application has now officially been lodged for the merger of Waterford IT and IT Carlow.
The merger would see the Technological University for the South East formed, with major campuses in Waterford, Carlow and in Wexford.
The news comes despite WIT’s TUI members last week voting against the terms of the merger.
However, it’s understood there was a low turnout for that ballot and members are now to be re-balloted.
Commenting on today’s historic occasion John Moore, Chair of IT Carlow Governing Body said: “Submitting the application for technological university designation is a major milestone in our decade-long work to create a TU of international standing in our region which will, above all, benefit our students and successive generations of students.”
