Phoenix police said a man was killed in a shooting that started with a fight at an apartment complex near Black Canyon Access Road and Maryland Avenue on Thursday.
In the late morning, officers located an employee of the apartment complex, who said he was assaulted by Willie Williams Jr., 39.
During the fight, the employee shot Williams, who was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, a police release said.
The employee stayed at the scene and has cooperated with investigators, police said. No arrests have been made, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.

PHOENIX, AZ A man was shot and killed after a fight at an apartment complex near the Interstate 17 on-ramp and Maryland Avenue Thursday morning, Phoenix police said.
Willie Williams Jr., 39, died in the shooting, which occurred about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to police.
An unidentified employee of the apartment complex shot Williams, police said. The employee told police Williams assaulted him, police said.
