The death toll was recorded at 5,33,333 with one new death reported from Kerala in 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

According to data on the Union Health Ministry website on Sunday, Kerala reported 128 new COVID-19 infections and one death due to the disease in the recent 24 hours.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a consistent uptick in COVID-19 cases throughout India.

WHO has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest following its rapid global spread. In recent weeks, JN.1 was reported in multiple countries, and its prevalence has been rapidly increasing globally.

Of the fresh cases, nine were caused by JN.1, increasing the number of infections tied to the new sub-variant in the state to 10, it said.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma directed the officials to stay alert and make proper arrangements for adequate quantities of oxygen cylinder-installed hospital beds and medicines.

The rise of JN.1 to dominance in the US could soon cause the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases of any wave so far, excluding only the initial Omicron wave exactly two years ago.

WHO designated JN.1, a subset of BA.2.86 Omicron, as a separate variant due to its rapid rise in recent weeks.

The JN.1 variant, previously part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineage, has seen a rapid rise globally, prompting extra precautions during the winter, when respiratory infections like Covid-19 are more prevalent.

Karnatakas Health Department recorded 21 new Covid cases in 24 hours, without any deaths.
