As someone who lived his early years in Wyoming, I always assumed western hikes were the toughest, most arduous, true real deal.

Cattle rustling isn’t a crime relegated to the Old West and the movies, it still happens in Wyoming, and livestock officials say it’s a crime that’s hard to solve.

One recent morning along 14,000-foot Culebra Peak in southern Colorado, a pair of hikers offered some assistance to another they met.

The winter of 2022-’23 walloped large-scale sheep operations in western Wyoming, even putting some ranchers out of business. There’s hope in the industry, however, and new niches are growing.

Over the next couple of months, several hundred hikers will hoof it through Wyoming as they hike the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada. The leanest and hardest among them have been on the trail since April. They hope to finish by late August.
