Kharge said the leaders of INDIA parties have come together as democracy is under threat under the Bharatiya Janata Party government.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi expressed the governments reluctance to suspend Members of Parliament from the Lok Sabha. However, he noted that opposition members were suspended because of their actions. As many as 146 MPs - 100 from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha - were suspended during the winter session of Parliament for unruly behaviour and carrying placards.

​In his reply to the Chairmans letter, Kharge not only justified the Opposition demand for the Home Ministers statement in the House on security breach but also asserted that the mass suspension of Opposition MPs “is detrimental to the core principle of Parliamentary democracy”. Kharge, however, accepted the Chairmans invite to him for a discussion but with the hope that the latter will "accommodate the Oppositions concerns".

Data compiled by think tank PRS Legislative Research reveals that half of the bills passed by the 17th Lok Sabha were discussed for less than two hours each, with only 16% referred to parliamentary standing committees. During the term, 172 bills were discussed and passed, of which 86 in the Lok Sabha and 103 in the Rajya Sabha had discussions of less than two hours each.
