To Stop Nazi Germany, the Soviets Became a Mortar Murder Machine It was the Soviet’s Red Army that was, without a doubt, the greatest proponent of the use of mortars during the so-called “Great Patriotic War.” Heres What You Need to Remember: Large stocks of the 82-PM-36 and improved 82-PM-37 were captured or destroyed during the rapid German advance in 1941. However, the Soviets developed a new—and arguably superior—mortar in the 82-PM-41, which went into mass production by the end ...

Hitlers Army Feared This Russian "Storm Bird" in World War II The Soviet Air Force’s Ilyushin Il-2 “Shturmovik” took a heavy toll in German armor on the Eastern Front. Heres What You Need to Know: The Il-2 proved deadly throughout the war. Vasily Emelianenko led a flight of Soviet Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmoviks, or “Storm Birds,” in late June 1942 against a German-held airfield near Artemovsk in eastern Ukraine, flying low up a deep ravine to avoid detection. The Il-2 planes banked slight...

Surviving The Siege: Stories from Leningrad Try as they might, Germany could never bring Leningrad to submission. Here are stories from some of those who survived the siege. Heres What You Need to Remember: For nearly three years, Leningrad was under attack night and day, and almost half its population, including 700,000 women and children, perished. Georgina’s mother sat next to me at her dining room table. She and her husband were veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and back in 1996 we al...

To Beat Hitler, Russia Became a Giant T-60 Tank Factory In 1942 the T-60 was up-armored to improve its battlefield survivability, while disc pattern road wheels replaced the spoked wheels fitted to the Model 1941 version of the tank. Heres What You Need to Remember: By 1942 the T-60 was unable to take on enemy tanks opposing it, and plans to upgrade it further were abandoned following the arrival of the T-70 series of light tanks. However, the T-60 proved to be the right tank at just the right...

Sad Stalin: How Finland Defied the Red Army During the Winter War From 1939 to 1940, Moscow decided to try and subdue Finland but the small country fought back and actually survived. Key point: If you live next door to a great power, it is best to both stay neutral and build a mighty military. This way if you must fight to defend yourself, you can actually succeed. Befuddled Soviet riflemen floundering through deep snow and sub-zero temperatures while they froze to death. Russian tanks and the...

Why did the USSR bomb neutral Sweden during WWII? Pe-2 bombers. Sputnik The Soviet Union dropped more than a hundred bombs on Swedish towns and villages. Miraculously, no-one was killed in those air raids. Not quite so neutral During World War II, Sweden was unable to stay away from the military conflict, as it had hoped to. Under pressure from the Third Reich, it had to agree to the transit of German troops through its territory. Furthermore, Stockholm deviated from its policy...

These mortars served the Soviet Union well as they fought for survival against a full-on invasion. Key point: Mortars are inexpensive and provide important portable artillery fire. Here is how they could rain down on the enemy and stall an advance. The mortar as an infantry support weapon has been in use for centuries, but it was during the Second World War that its role on the battlefield proved rather decisive. It was used by all of the six main armies of the war including those of Germany, ...

A BIT of a stushie on social media about Marks & Spencer selling Ramones T-shirts, with ardent fans complaining that Johnny, Joey and co would be turning in their graves. Well, they are all dead. It’s just another predictable instance of big business cashing in on the afterlife of stars. I mean, who hasn’t got a six-pack of David Bowie Happy Socks at £59.99? But if you’re a cheapskate you could go for the three-pack in special presentation (cardboard) box at £39.95 – which “incl...
