This week in Reading The Wheel of Time, we’re picking up in the middle of Chapter 44. Rand’s observation tower has just been lightninged out of existence as part of the Forsaken’s ongoing attempt to spring the Sammael trap, and Rand, Aviendha, and Egwene have ridden off in search of a new view of the battle, despite all three being quite a bit worn out and worse for wear. You know, I didn’t mention this last week, but I keep thinking about how lucky Rand is that he had them to stop him ...

Welcome back once again to Reading The Wheel of Time! We have finally come to the climactic climax at Cairhien (how’s that for alliteration?) which means a lot of choices that people have been struggling with. Mat has to confront what his leaving Rand means for the fight. Egwene and Aviendha have to honor their commitment to using the One Power in battle, despite the rules that govern both Aes Sedai and Wise Ones. And Rand has to face the consequences at the end of the road Couladin’s usurp...

Welcome back to Reading the Wheel of Time! This week we’re covering Chapter 41 and 42, in which Rand is a very important man who has a tower, Lan gets sneaky, and Mat protests entirely too much. Oh, and he does some cool battle planning stuff too. Chapter 41 opens with Rand standing on a hilltop and surveying the three camps below him. One is Tairen, while the other two are Cairhienin, separated into cavalry and infantry. They are all the Tairen and Cairhienin forces at his disposal, and too ...

Hello and welcome to this week’s installment of Reading the Wheel of Time. We have tricks with knives and tricks with silver arrows, a new hint about the Forsaken’s plan for Rand, and difficult, painful days both for Nynaeve and for Liandrin. Let’s get to it! Chapter 33 opens with Nynaeve standing blindfolded, leaning against a board while Thom practices knife throwing. She curses herself for agreeing to participate in this, focusing on her annoyance and what she will do to Thom and to Va...

Recapping, am I right? This week’s rather lengthy installment of Reading The Wheel of Time covers Chapter 30-32, which includes Aviendha choosing not to run anymore, Rand doing a lot of off-the-cuff channeling, sex, the Seanchan, and yet another reminder that Rand needs to be “hard” when it comes to being a leader, both with his allies and his enemies. Oh, and we also have perhaps the greatest romance trope of all time, the old “we have to share body heat or we’ll die.” I mean, the ...

This week in Reading the Wheel of Time, we’ll be covering Chapters 24 and 25. Egwene discovers Nynaeve and Elayne’s secret, we learn a little more about how Tel’aran’rhiod works, and find out that Moghedien, unsurprisingly, is as close as we feared. But first, let’s recap! The land grows less hilly and more verdant as Rand and his followers pass further into Cairhien, the sun dropping lower as the Aiel marvel over the landscape, but Egwene notes that they adapt quickly, and that thei...

This week in Reading the Wheel of Time, it’s adventures with Draghkar and suspicious Maidens. I’m not sure I trust Melindhra as far as Mat could throw her, and Sammael—possibly several Forsaken—is up to something. Also, what’s with all the comments about short guys? Short guys are great. Chapter 22 opens with Mat in his tent, getting a massage from Melindhra. She remarks that he is well-muscled for a short man, prompting Mat into disgruntled musings about how he’s only short by Aiel...
