NEW DELHI: Google on Sunday celebrates the country s first woman doctor with a special doodle on her 160th birth anniversary.
The Goodle homepage showcases a portrait of Ganguly with the image of the main building of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital in the background. This has been designed by Bengaluru-based artist Oddrija.
Along with Anandi Joshi, Ganguly became the first woman in colonial India to study medicine and earn a degree in 1886. While Joshi studied at Womans Medical College of Pennsylvania in the US, Ganguly pursued western medicine at Calcutta Medical College (CMC).
Born in a Brahmo family on July 18, 1861, Ganguly, along with Chandramukhi Basu, became the first female graduates in India, from Bethune College in Kolkata.

KOLKATA: Tributes poured in for Kadambini Ganguly, one of India s first two women doctors on Sunday, her 160th birth anniversary.
Along with Anandi Joshi, Ganguly became the first woman in colonial India to study medicine and earn a degree in 1886.

Responding to an honorary graphic doodle put out by Google on Sunday, tributes are pouring in from everywhere for the 160th birth anniversary of India s first woman doctor Kadambini Ganguly.
The doodle designed by a Bengaluru-based artist Oddrija is essaying a portrait of Dr Ganguly with the image of the main building of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital as the backdrop. The graphic design is widely shared across the length and breath of the country.

Dr Ananabai Joshee studied at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, later the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, and dedicated her career to treating women. Sadly, she died too young. Anandibai Joshee graduated from Woman s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC) in 1886. Seen here with Kei Okami (center) and Sabat Islambooly (right).  
Key Highlights
Dr Anandabai Gopal Joshee was not only the first Indian woman to receive a Western medical degree, but also the first known Hindu woman to travel to America.
She hailed from Kalyan in Maharashtra, but travelled to the US to study medicine at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, later the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, which was the first medical school in the world established (in 1850) to train women as medical doctors.
