announcer: this is cnn breaking news. and we re back with breaking news. a brand-new cnn poll that we are unveiling right here on the lead. how americans feel about president trump just 14 months before he faces re-election in november 2020. there is bad news for president trump when it comes to his approval rating with 39% approving of his handling of the presidency. and 55% of those polled saying they disapprove. that approval rating for president trump is the lowest since january when washington, d.c. was in the midst of a fight over the government shutdown. david chalian joins me now. where is the president s support of 39% coming from. this won t surprise you, but republicans are overwhelmingly driving his support. look at that 88% number approval among republicans. where he is struggling with
those won t surprise you, those are more states not trump states. are there republicans who are going to live to regret that their legacy, including lindsey graham, becomes attacking the power of the article 1 branch in which they serve just for donald trump? i don t think so because i think there s an explanation on this issue i have already heard from the stump of how the constitution originally didn t address this is specific issue, how they did in 1976 gerald ford signed into law. i think there s a procedure there to do it, but in politics, the voters don t really get that deep into the procedure. this is an issue that s going to end up being about illegal immigration and whether you believe we have illegal immigration problem, whether you believe we have a problem at the southern border, and it was really, joy, as you and i discussed before, that we had 16 people in a primary against donald trump. and his number one issue was
turning now to the turning to the investigations of the trump administration. and our nbc news wall street journal poll, more overnight by opening up new investigations. overall 55% said yes, while 42% said no. take a look at the party breakdown. it won t surprise you, by a margin of 88 to 10 democrats said yes, they support more investigations. among republicans, the result was flipped, 18% said yes while 81% are opposed. for what it s worth, independents looked like the mix of the two with a majority wanting more investigations. joining me now is the man who will lead the house intelligence committee in the next congress. democrat adam schiff. welcome back.
these people are trying to cast themselves as rebels and the resistance, trying to look good in history. they aren t going to do anything to donald trump. they said they thought about the sort of constitutional baker act that they thought about 25th amendmenting him but they said, let s not have a constitutional crisis. we want our tax cuts. isn t it true that whoever this is, they re not going to do anything about donald trump? they re not. and, joy, this won t surprise you, having been a political operative most of my life. i capital tell you how many times i ve tried to get anonymous op-eds printed in newspapers. i can t tell you how many times. how many times i ve tried to get them printed with real names on this em. when i first saw this, nothing surprised me in the memo the op-ed. most of this has been reported and the dysfunction has been reported. but i thought, this is absolutely politically brilliant. we have now changed the conversation from judge kavanaugh to an op-ed.
