Polar Park’s vice president of hospitality believes success in his line of work comes from remembering the most important adage in minor league baseball.
“People come here to eat and drink and have a good time; it just so happens that there s a baseball game going on,” Cody Malone told me last week as we walked through Polar Park, joined by Rob Crain, a senior vice president for sales and marketing at the Worcester Red Sox.
In part, the two had spent much of the final week before the team’s first homestand preparing the park’s concessions for Opening Day Tuesday. They just placed the largest beer order in Atlas Distributing Inc.’s history and were expecting the kegs and cans to arrive at the stadium by week’s end.

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) Concrete is curing, saws are buzzing, and Larry Lucchino is at home again, in a ballpark.
At an age when many ease into retirement, the 75-year-old three-time cancer survivor instead headed to the minor leagues for one more chance to run a baseball team and build it a new home.
“I don’t think (retirement) is the way I’m wired,” Lucchino said this spring during an interview in the upper deck at the $118 million Polar Park. “I want to keep doing and being and making and contributing.”

The wait is finally over. After more than a year of simulated games and workouts, the alternate site has finally become a thing of the past, and the Worcester Red Sox begin their inaugural season Tuesday night on the road against Toronto Blue Jays affiliate Buffalo Bisons in Trenton, N.J.
Fans will get the chance to see three of the top prospects in the Red Sox’s system at Polar Park next week infielder Jeter Downs (No. 2), outfielder Jarren Duran (No. 3) and righty Tanner Houck (No. 6).
Polar Park to-do list is shrinking before opening day but a duck boat, a diner and centerfield play zone will all arrive after May 11

Giant-sized World Series rings celebrating the championships of the Boston Red Sox sit outside of the Madison Street entrance at Polar Park. Just a year ago Tuesday, the dirt lot that became Polar Park saw the first steel beam go up as construction on Worcester’s new ballpark got underway. These days, it’s looking just about ready to welcome the new Worcester Red Sox as the park finishes taking shape.
With Opening Day at Polar Park pushed back to May 11, the construction has primarily focused on making sure the players have everything they need in April, when the park will open as the Red Sox’s alternate site. The delay gave the construction crew a little leeway to complete areas like the concourses, press boxes and suites. But the field itself, aside from some patches of snow and ice that don’t ever seem to get any sun, looks ready for baseball.
