A massive, out-of-control fire burning across both California and Nevada is generating extreme fire behavior, spawning “fire whirls” and creating dangerous conditions for firefighters, authorities said.

Crews battled "fire whirls" in Mojave National Preserve as a massive wildfire crossed into Nevada amid dangerously high temperatures and raging winds.

The blaze is the largest wildfire of the season in California.

At last update, the York Fire had charred 80,437 acres near the border of California and Nevada, and was reported as 23% contained, according to a Tuesday briefing from firefighters.

The York fire started in federal lands in the Mojave National Preserve and was first observed on Friday burning near Caruthers Canyon.

Firefighters struggled to slow the York fire as it rampaged across a Mojave Desert landscape that is a vast, delicate and vital ecosystem.

As the York fire crosses into Nevada, it's scorching a Joshua tree forest in California's Mojave National Preserve. And it could be marching toward the third-biggest Joshua tree in the world.
