part driven by folks leaving those jobs because of mandates, not just people testing positive for covid. joining me now as new york post columnist carol markel which. she fled deep blue new york city for the redder pastures of florida. karol, good to see you tonight. thank you, laura. had not looked back. laura: yeah, i don t blame you. the collapse of public transportation really kind of tells the story about how these blue cities have crushed their working-class population, and i don t see right now in the near future their recovery. i don t see it. your reaction? you are absolutely right. it all starts with people working on their couches and they have to go back to the offices feared until that happened, these transportation systems will continue to struggle. i coined the phrase pajama class in august 2022 describe the people who could indefinitely stay home and get things delivered to their door. my main point was that when the
who could possibly vote for them? i think not correct. hispanics are upwardly noble, working class population. culturally quite moderate and democrats assumed that they would respond to exactly the sa appealed to the more liberal part of their political coalition. i don t think that was the case. i think a lot of hispanics had worries about when is the economy going to open up again? they didn t feel they did badly under trump. they were worried about the rhetoric they saw out of the democratic party. in tend, a lot of these moderate voters didn t find much difficulty in voting for donald trump. at least less so than in 2016. we have seen this trend continue in the 2020 election. all the data i ve seen, democrats are doing worse among hispanics, particularly the working class hispanics where i looked at data that showed a
words i was not well and they came and injected themselves into my life. the very high risk of middle age white men, sanjay, do we know much of why that group has gotten vulnerable? we know in the united states as a whole, life expectancy has dropped over the last couple of years which is kind of an extraordinary thing because it s been steadily going up over the last couple of years, it plateau and then dropped. and as you point out, it s the middle aged white working class population that seems to be hit the hardest. the most common cause of premature death are liver cirrhosis, tipically due to alcoholism and death by suicide and opiod overdose. why it s this particular population in particular, it could be they have been hit harder by the economic downturn, there s more stigma about
ahead by 3 or 4. let s stop. a lot of people look at the l.a. times tracking poll, the one poll people say got it right. well, actually, the l.a. times poll had trump winning by 5, winning the popular vote by 5. he lost it by 1. so that s a six-point error, more than a lot of the polls that supposedly got it wrong. but keep going. why did the polls get the upper midwest wrong? i think what those states have in common is they have a large white working class population and in those same states clinton was expected to do quite well in traditionally republican areas like the milwaukee suburbs or western michigan. traditional democratic areas. no, republican areas. like the last poll out of wisconsin from marquette, which is a good poll, showed a close race in the milwaukee suburbs. polling in michigan showed clinton competitive in western michigan, traditionally the most conservative part of the state. and on the last day of the campaign clinton stopped in western michigan. th
