1990: Born in Sheffield on December 30 to Helen and Matt. Educated at Dore Primary School and then King Ecgberts and Worksop College alongside younger brother Billy, born in August 1992.
2004: Handed a Yorkshire scholarship contract at the age of 13 having impressed coaches such as Ian Dews and Kevin Sharp.
2006: Debuted in the Sheffield Collegiate first team, scoring seven as an opener in a Premier League victory over Sheffield United. His father Matt played in the same game. Made a century for England under 15s later that summer.
2007: Made his Yorkshire Academy and second-team debuts in the same summer, scoring seven and eight respectively. His first Academy century came the following year.

There have been many significant influences during Joe Root’s stellar career with Yorkshire and England, one which reaches the 100 Test caps milestone in India later this week. Childhood friend Josh Varley is certainly one of them.
Root and Varley, the first-team captain at the pair’s home club Sheffield Collegiate and a respected young coach, go way back.
“I’ve known Joe ever since he started playing cricket really,” explained the latter ahead of Friday morning’s first Test in Chennai.
“We went to the same school, and our parents are really good friends.
