Eastern Cape municipal workers have weighed in on the political drama at the troubled OR Tambo district council and have called on the provincial government to take control of the municipality. Samwu in the Eastern Cape is so fed up with political and administration shenanigans in the district that it wants the province to place OR Tambo under administration.
The ANC in the Eastern Cape has suspended 24 councillors in the OR Tambo district municipality over alleged ill-discipline and defiance of the provincial leadership relating to deployments.
The chaos at the OR Tambo District Municipality, where two council speakers lead two warring councils that run the municipality parallel to each other, took another turn on when another faction suspended Mayor Thokozile Sokhanyile.
The ANC has drawn a line in the sand, said president Cyril Ramaphosa, and ill-discipline and disrespect within the ruling party will no longer be tolerated. He was speaking at the Northern Cape’s provincial conference at the weekend.
Former ANC president Thabo Mbeki will attend the party’s three-day extended provincial executive committee meeting in East London this weekend. Mbeki is expected to make presentations on the ANC’s unity, its renewal and revolutionary morality. “Comrade Mbeki will also be contributing on how to reassert the ANC as a movement rooted among the people and a leader of society.
