The government missed the right time to relocate the third liquefied natural gas terminal project away from off the coast of Datan Borough (大潭) in Taoyuan’s Guanyin District (觀音), the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance on Friday said on Facebook.
However, as the project is instrumental to the nation’s energy transition, construction should go ahead, the group said.
The remarks come just days before voters in a referendum on Saturday can voice their opinion on whether the project should be relocated.
The alliance said that during the project’s environmental impact assessment in 2018, it urged the government to propose an alternative to the plan
A planned launch site for sounding rockets in Pingtung County might become available at the end of this month, if local Aborigines agree with its establishment, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on Thursday.
The ministry and the National Space Organization (NSPO) for more than a year have been negotiating an agreement to use the site in Mudan Township’s (牡丹) Syuhai Village (旭海).
Although the National Property Administration owns the site, meaning the ministry has rights to use it, Article 21 of the Indigenous Peoples Basic Act (原住民族基本法) says that the consent of local Aborigines is required.

The Chinese Christian Relief Association yesterday called on people to join a fundraising campaign for delivering necessities to underprivileged families, as many are struggling during the COVID-19 outbreak.
After a level 3 COVID-19 alert was implemented nationwide on May 19, the association’s 1919 Food Bank, TSMC Charity Foundation, convenience store chain 7-Eleven and its Good Neighbor Foundation partnered to launch a digital fundraising campaign through 7-Eleven’s platforms.
The campaign funds food packages that contain rice, oil, dried noodles and canned food, with each package costing NT$300, the association said in a news release.
