steve centanni has more live from washington. steve. reporter: yeah jon, the recession has officially ended but these new figures pulled from government data by usa today indicate the recovery is still fragile. people the numbers indicate that americans are relying on government assistance, including social security, medicare, food stamps, unemployment benefits, more than at any time in our nation s history. the amount of income people get from their wages accounts for 50.5% of their overall income, the lowest level since the government began tracking the information back in 1929. now, why is this happening? there are several reasons, including the expansion of health care. other government programs as well. the aging american population. and the current economic hard times. now, we could look at graph indicating the percentage of personal income that s derived from government payments. in 1950, those payments accounted for 6.2% of income. in 1990, that number doubled
