Subtle impressions close in on the viewer and overwhelm him. Emanating from the exhibitionâs diverse offerings â which include paintings, sculptural and video installations and slide presentations, among others â they surge forward from all corners of the extensive well-lit cavernous museumâs exhibition hall with white-coated walls.
A few words about this museum, which is tucked away nicely in the basement of a part of the main building that houses the Yaba College of Technologyâs School of Art, Design and Printing. It is called the Yaba Art Museum and is currently hosting the exhibition, titled Living Blue! (Nike Monica Okundaye Archive Retrospective). A special dinner event, at the instance of the Lagos State Government (through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture) in partnership with GAC Motor, will be organised in her honour at the Banquet Hall of Eko Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos from 6 pm. Expected at the event, whose chief host is the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, are the leading lights of the local arts community.
At the landmark age of 70, the woman – known in the art circles as “Mama Nike” – has every reason to be thankful for the inexorable weavings of creation. Her life’s story so far is an exemplar of the triumph of spirit, which saw her wade through the darkest nights of her soul.
