Home Groan: A NutMag Anthology brings together 22 authors, which is more than double its usual assemblage, and three illustrators who bring to life stories, memories and everyday images of Penang. Zine editor Anna Tan says the idea to expand the usual small-collection of stories into a full-blown anthology stemmed from wanting to mark a milestone for MYWriters Penang, the state branch of the Malaysian Writers Society (MYWriters).

Daniel Zhang, the winner of this year’s Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers. An eleventh grader from Edison, New Jersey, who attends Phillips Exeter Academy, Zhang won for his poem “Golden.” Praising the poem for its striking imagery, its “small details and grit,” our judge, Emily Nason, wrote: “This poem encapsulates so much of what it means to be a human: the daily heartbreak, violence, and thirst for acceptance we all experience.” Nason selected the winning poem from more than 1,300 submissions by young writers in forty-six states and forty countries outside the United States.
