joining me is david mcnamara. david, i'll begin with you, the president had a flurry of meetings over the last few days and spoke to john boehner by phone on friday. what are you hearing about these conversations? what is the president saying to lawmakers? >> what's interesting, alex, as you say, even though he's having a lot of these conversations, the white house continues to say they're not going to negotiate. as you saw yesterday, there seemed to be progress, but already this morning, john boehner is telling folk that is the white house is rejecting the offer. the white house feels like they have a winning hand here and have seen what's happened recently with some of the polling that's come out that the republicans are taking the blame. so they have no reason to move from their position, which they want a longer term on the debt limit and the budget to reopen the government. right now it looks like the white house is probably going to be talking more with the senate republicans over the next day or two and see if the senate republicans and the senate can come to an agreement to put more pressure on the house.
