It includes award recipients Sophie Hawkes, who s the Rising ECE Hero and Community Heroes Hayley Strachan and the Moa Kids Team. NZEI President Liam Rutherford says parents, whanau groups and educators put forward amazing submissions. He says the response from early childhood teachers through Covid-19 has highlighted they re in the job because they have the best interest of children at heart.

28 January 2021 NZEI Te Riu Roa has launched an independent review of perceived under-resourcing in primary schooling , inviting public submissions on how to ensure every child can realise their potential.  NZEI Te Riu Roa members have raised serious concerns about insufficient staffing and the ability of schools to meet the needs of every student, and NZEI Te Riu Roa President Liam Rutherford said it was time to take a proactive lead on finding solutions to present to government.  “With that in mind, we’re launching  Pūaotanga: An independent review of primary school staffing, to delve into these issues,” he says.

New data shows stark pay imbalance in early childhood education 25 February 2021 New data in a report released by the Ministry of Education today show the urgency of addressing the pay imbalances in early childhood education, says the sector’s union NZEI Te Riu Roa. “The figures released today show just how stark and unfair the imbalance in pay is across our sector, and how urgently we need to see the Minister’s plan to deliver his election promise of pay parity in this May’s Budget”, says Virginia Oakly, Early Childhood Education Representative on the union’s National Executive. “For doing substantively the same work, ECE teachers are being paid on average 30% less than their colleagues in Kindergartens and primary schools.
