Steering system failure may be cause of tanker, cargo ship collision

JOHOR BARU: A steering system failure is suspected to be the cause of a collision between a bulk carrier and a cargo ship at Sungai Muar near here. Johor MMEA director First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria said that Malta-registered bulk carrier, MV Galapagos, was reported to have experienced steering system failure, causing it to move to the right and block the route of Great Britain-registered cargo ship, MV Zephyr Lumos. MV Zephyr Lumos failed to avoid MV Galapagos, causing the collision to happen about 14.1 nautical miles south-west of the Sungai Muar estuary, he said in a statement Sunday (July 11). He noted that MV Zephyr Lumos was on its way to the Suez Canal while MV Galapagos was heading towards India when the collision occurred at 12.03am early Sunday (July 11) morning.
