Christie s Hong Kong Chinese Paintings Department presents rare and exquisite paintings

.-Christies will present a series of spectacular Chinese Paintings at auction this Spring on 26 and 27 May. Highlighted by exceptional masterpieces from the classical to the modern age, Wutong Studio in Autumn by Zhang Zongcang and Chess Playing by Fu Baoshi will lead the sales of Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy and Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Painting. In addition, two spectacular masterpieces from distinguished Asian private collections, Temple at the Mountain Peak by Zhang Daqian and Scenery of Mount Lao by Wu Guanzhong, will be presented in the 20th and 21st Century Art Evening Sale on 24 May.

With travel restrictions still ravaging the art industry, auction houses are pulling out all the stops to work out a new normal for their auction lineups, including auctions that feature a mix of genres from different eras.
Earlier tonight, saw Sotheby’s cross-category evening sale in Hong Kong. Touted by the auction house as one that spans a thousand years of history by great artists from the East and the West.
This season’s modern and contemporary sales were opened with this diverse sale, which achieved a total hammer of HK$317m (US$40.8m), just scraping past the presale low estimate of HK$292m. Leading the five-lot sale was one of Pablo Picasso’s final matador series works, which edged out Chinese Matisse Sanyu and sold for HK$140m (US$18m) after fees.

.-Sothebys today unveiled the full offering of its 2021 Hong Kong Spring Sale Series to be held from 16 to 23 April, presenting categories ranging from fine art, including Chinese works of art and paintings, modern and contemporary art, through to the luxury market with jewellery, watches, wines and spirits. The week-long sale series encompasses outstanding works from times both ancient and modern, unified by the pursuit of the highest levels of creativity and craftsmanship by artists and brands alike. Featuring over 2,500 lots with a combined estimate in excess of HK$3.2 billion (US$417 million), the 2021 Spring Sales will carry the highest estimate for any sale series ever staged in Asia.
