Updated: 8:07 AM EDT May 26, 2021 Tommy s Country Ham House in Greenville will close its doors Sunday after more than 30 years in business.Owner Tommy Stevenson said he s retiring. This has been one of the most difficult decisions I ve ever made, Stevenson said. The Country Ham House has been my life. This year, I ll be 80 and I want to spend more time with my children and grandchildren. Originally located on Buncombe Street, Stevenson purchased the restaurant in 1985. It moved to its current location on Rutherford Street in 1997.Along with regular diners, Tommy s has been known as a frequent stop for stumping politicians, and photos of visitors line the restaurant s Wall of Fame. Family aside, the Country Ham House has been my life s great reward, Stevenson said. Operating a restaurant is no easy task, but the satisfaction comes when the dining room is full of folks who say how much they enjoyed their meal and appreciate us being there. Greenville businessman Tommy Stevenson selected to Furman Hall of Fame

Tommy s Country Ham House founder Tommy Stevenson now has another honor before he closes up shop to go with the many he has accumulated through his decades of business in Greenville: He will be inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame.Furman announced Thursday that Stevenson, a 1965 graduate, will join two soccer greats and an influential cross-country/track and field head coach as part of the university s Hall of Fame Class of 2021.Soccer All-American Shea Salinas, 2008, two-time Southern Conference Soccer Player of the Year Stephanie Devita, 2016, and former head coach Bill Keesling will share the honor.Read more on the inductees here.Ceremonies are expected next spring but details about the occasion have yet to be announced.The university will induct the Hall of Fame Class of 2020 this fall a ceremony that was postponed due to the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic.
