Ax-throwing, bowling to come to Falmouth

FALMOUTH Visitors and residents could soon grab a drink, bowl and throw axes at an establishment off Main Street.  The Falmouth Select Board approved, at its Monday meeting, a liquor license and a bowling alley license for an ax-throwing/bowling alley at 23 Town Hall Square, where the former Ryan’s Family Amusements was located before it closed in December 2020.  The facility, which is anticipated to open either late summer or early fall, will be called Timber. The existing bowling alley will be maintained and will also offer ax-throwing as well as food and drinks, said Kevin Klauer, an attorney representing the applicant, Town Hall Partners. 

Former Falmouth Board of Selectmen member Virginia Valiela dies at 79

FALMOUTH If Virginia Valiela had an opinion about something and started a conversation with you, you d see her way by the end of it.  She used her knowledge to influence others for the better,” said Mimi McConnell, a friend of Valiela s and a fellow environmentalist.   Valiela, 79, a longtime public servant and environmental advocate, died May 15 from cancer.  She spent more than 50 years serving the town of Falmouth, pushing forward a variety of community projects that are still in use today from the town’s recycling program to its wastewater management plan.  “Her dedication to the town seemed to have no bounds,” said Doug Brown, vice-chair of the Falmouth Select Board and Valiela’s neighbor and friend.

Onjalé Scott Price wins Falmouth Select Board seat FALMOUTH Onjalé Scott Price defeated Michael Heylin in the race for a seat on the Falmouth Select Board inTuesday s election. Scott Price, chief operating officer of Mizar Imaging and co-director of the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program, won the Falmouth Select Board seat with 2,697 votes. Michael Heylin had 1,265 votes.  Ballot question 1, which sought funds to pay the debt to replace the roof of the Teaticket School, passed with 2,839 in favor and 516 against.  “I’m ecstatic,” Scott Price said. “I’m excited. At one point it was announced that I am the first person of color on the Select Board, which is monumental. I don’t plan to be the last by any means.” 

Falmouth Select Board Praises New Senior Housing Project Plans

Members of the Falmouth Select Board on Monday, May 10, lauded the nonprofit Falmouth Housing Corporation’s latest project for providing much-needed affordable rental apartments to lower income residents. “It’s a pretty exciting project,” Falmouth Assistant Town Manager Peter Johnson-Staub said. “It is aimed at helping some of the most vulnerable members of our community.” As proposed, the project is for 48 rental units for people 62 and older at 763 Main Street and 24 Scranton Avenue. The latter is currently vacant and the Main Street parcel is where a now-shuttered Cape Cod 5 branch is located. That building would be torn down to make way for the new development.

Coastal Resiliency Action Committee To Present Final Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

The Falmouth Coastal Resiliency Action Committee will present the final report on the climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning project to the Falmouth Select Board on June 21. The committee has been working in with the Woods Hole Group and other town entities on the project over the last few years. The committee has recently been reviewing and expanding upon the draft of the feasibility study that was presented to the select board in October of 2020. According to its verbiage, “one of the primary objectives of the project is to raise public awareness of the escalating flood risks posed by sea-level rise and storm surge, as well as present strategies available to the Town to adapt to these changes over time.”
