Some canegrowers say they have no option but to bite the bullet and harvest their crop, even if it means they will accumulate huge debts.
“Our hands are tied,” said Maro TT Gang 2 grower Tara Singh.
The Nadi-based farmer said although farmers were disappointed with the $54.36 forecast price per tonne for the 2021 season, they would have to cut their cane to support their livelihoods.
“We don’t really have much of an option, it is our own crop and if we don’t cut it, it will be us that will suffer the loss,” he said.

More COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in the Fiji Corrections Services 25-member cane cutting team that was deployed to Rakiraki on June 26.
It is unclear how many of the nine people that had tested positive were Corrections Officers and how many were inmates.
