Epic final battle looming for Finn class titans at Tokyo 2020

Enoshima with Mount Fuji watching over the field of play - Tokyo 2020 © Sailing Energy / World Sailing An epic final battle is looming for the Finn class in Tokyo. All bets are off with one of the strongest line-ups of potential medallists in a generation. With the Finn class making its final appearance at Tokyo 2020, after the class was dropped for 2024, these titans of the sailing world have one last chance to win a Finn medal and it s going to be a fight all the way. The Finn has been gifted the smallest fleet at Tokyo 2020 for its last appearance at the Olympics, but it is one deep in both experience and youthful ambition. Based on recent performance 14 sailors could be considered medal potential, with at least five of them certainly gold medal potential. However, this is the Olympics and the expected doesn t always happen.

Patience was key on Day 3 of the U23 Finn World Championship for the Finn Silver Cup at Tihany on Lake Balaton. Unfortunately though, it remained unrewarded with no more races sailed, though the young sailors enjoyed swimming in the lake with temperatures up to 37 degrees. So the results stand from Monday. There are two days left. Andres Ivan Lloret Pe rez, from near Alicante in Spain is in sixth place overall and has travelled the farthest to compete in this regatta. This is his last year as an U23, and it was a big trip to make it to Balaton. I like the Silver Cup because it s a nice regatta and this year in Balaton, it s a good place for racing. It s generally light winds but it s good and it s nice place to come to.
