Fulton County Schools nearing end of 5-year capital plan

ATLANTA — The Fulton County School System is entering the final year of its five-year building program in better shape financially and operationally than expected. “What a climb we ve had and we re almost at the top,” said Louis Mosley, interim director of operations for the district. “The good news is I have a message of promises made and promises delivered.” Under Capital Plan 2022 which kicked off in June 2017, Mosely said 88 of the district’s 105 schools will have been “touched” in some way, either through building upgrades, technology improvements, safety equipment or combinations of all. The $980 million capital plan is funded primarily through the 1-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which was renewed by voters for a fourth time in June 2017 and runs through June 2022. 2022 Fulton County Schools budget reflects recovery

ATLANTA, Ga. — Fears of falling revenues from the COVID-19 pandemic have relaxed as Fulton County School System closes out the current year and looks ahead with cautious optimism. A return of consumer consumption, along with a significant infusion of state and federal funds, kept the district financially sound this year, district officials say. Next year, local tax receipts are expected to continue rising. “Financially we re not where we could be [without the pandemic], but we re not as bad as we initially thought,” said Marvin Dereef, chief financial officer for Fulton County Schools. As the district prepares for fiscal year 2022, which begins July 1, preliminary projections call for an overall budget of $1.04 billion, a decline of $7 million from the current year.
