Innovation Academy to open with full classes in August

ATLANTA, Ga. — Innovation Academy in downtown Alpharetta will open in August with every available seat filled, and a host of others on a wait list in the event of a vacancy. The North Fulton region’s newest high school will enroll just over 900 students in grades nine and 10 in its inaugural class, with 150 students on a wait list. All were selected through a lottery. In two years, the school will be at full capacity in grades nine through 12. “It’s hard to believe that just a few short years ago this was just an idea up in the clouds,” said Principal Tim Duncan. “It’s been quite a pleasure to be entrusted with such an amazing project that is going to benefit so many.”’

th anniversary of the school. About 50 people — including graduates and former staff — assembled at the school’s original site on Milton Avenue in Alpharetta to honor its history and to acknowledge the district’s new Innovation Academy that now stands in its stead. Even with new landscaping and a shiny, three-story building in the backdrop, the site conjured images of the old school to those on hand Saturday. “The old building is gone now,” said Jackie Angel, who spent 15 years teaching social studies at the school on Milton Avenue. “But as someone said on our Facebook page, ‘Milton High School lives in our hearts, it doesn’t live in a building.’”

2022 Fulton County Schools budget reflects recovery

ATLANTA, Ga. — Fears of falling revenues from the COVID-19 pandemic have relaxed as Fulton County School System closes out the current year and looks ahead with cautious optimism. A return of consumer consumption, along with a significant infusion of state and federal funds, kept the district financially sound this year, district officials say. Next year, local tax receipts are expected to continue rising. “Financially we re not where we could be [without the pandemic], but we re not as bad as we initially thought,” said Marvin Dereef, chief financial officer for Fulton County Schools. As the district prepares for fiscal year 2022, which begins July 1, preliminary projections call for an overall budget of $1.04 billion, a decline of $7 million from the current year.
