A ZIMBABWE Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef) contractor, who was alleged to be a fugitive from justice in the United States, was never convicted of any crime in that country, it has emerged.
Zimdef was last week accused of giving Tawanda Wallen Mangere of Tano Digital Solutions a huge information technology contract without doing background checks.
Mangere’s rivals claimed that he had served a jail term in the United States for fraud or that he had fled America fearing incarceration.
The US embassy in Harare linked NewsDay to Fulton County Magistrates’ Court in Georgia, where Mangere was detained for about 90 minutes.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said her investigation of the Trump Organization, which had been civil, has morphed into a criminal probe, making her the second state official who might bring criminal charges against the former president.
âWe have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan D.A. We have no additional comment at this time,â Fabien Levy, a spokesman for James, said in a statement issued late Tuesday.
One focus of Jamesâs investigation had been the appraisal of Seven Springs, a Trump property on 212 acres in Westchester County. Jamesâs investigators have been trying to determine whether Donald Trumpâs company gave an accurate valuation for the property when it served as the basis for about $21.1 million in tax deductions for donating a conservation easement for t
