It takes patience, practice and persistence to create a fictional character, add life to it, and elevate its status to that of a national figure. Farooq Qaiser was able to achieve all this and more during his lifetime. A creative genius by birth – and a passionate learner – Farooq Qaiser advanced the thoughts of the youth as well as the intellectual capacity of adults through his well-scripted puppet shows. Indeed, his television show, Kaliyan, was a novel concept when it was first aired in 1976. While puppetry may have been an art form in villages and suburban areas, it was not promoted as a television show with a theme, story, and message. Through Kaliyan and Uncle Sargam, the masses across Pakistan were introduced to a puppet-based show akin to the American educational children’s television series, ‘Sesame Street’. Islamabad: Director General of Pakistan National Council of the Arts Dr. Fouzia Saeed on Saturday said that the sudden demise of famous ventriloquist Farooq Qaisar (uncle Sargam) has saddened us all and the entire nation is in deep sorrow and grief.
He was a man of vision who wrote and spoke to highlight evil characters and pointed out the weaknesses in our social life, said a press release issued here.
His unmatchable, remarkable, undeniable and universal characters have played a vital role in educating people.
The unforgettable Farooq Qaisar will remain alive through his writings and acting. He has international recognition for his contribution to the art world. He joined PNCA’s national puppet theatre on the special request of Dr Fozia Saeed and remained associated with PNCA’s puppet team providing guidance in promoting puppetry art despite of his deteriorating health and corona pandemic.

Farooq Qaiser was famous for highlighting various social issues with his iconic character Uncle Sargam. The legendary character was first showcased in 1976 in children’s program Kaliyan. Farooq Qaiser had been associated with PTV since 1976.
The artist was born on October 13, 1945 in Sialkot. Due to his father’s government job, he travelled to different cities of Pakistan and completed his educational journey in different cities. He completed his matriculation from Peshawar, FA from Quetta and graduated from National College of Arts, Lahore. He did his Masters from Romania and completed Masters in Mass Communication from California, USA in 1999.
