Teen Wins Essay Contest Writing About Her Cat, Donates $50,000 Winnings to Cat Shelter

Sydney spends her time volunteering with the Ferndale Cat Shelter, and added her experiences working with the cats to her essay.
“I figured OK, let’s write a story maybe by some miraculous reason we’ll get in the top something,” she said.
She wrote about some things she was personally going through, and how Mr. Mittens has helped her push through.
“I have an illness called POTS and so with some of the symptoms that come with the illness are dizziness, fatigue and muscle aches, Sydney told WXYZ. My cat Mr. Mittens, I got him when he was 4 ounces and he was about a week old, so he was very, very small and he had to be bottle-fed. And I really thought I was going to help save his life, but I did not even know he would actually help save mine.

This 13-year-old just changed 2021 for a small animal shelter in Ferndale, Michigan.
Meet Sidney Hertzberg. She loves cats. In fact, she volunteers at the Ferndale Cat Shelter. She recently enter a Petco contest by writing an essay about her cat. Her survey paid off to the tune of $50,000. You can see the moment she finds out that she won in the video below from ABC 7 at about the :15 second mark.
Sidney told WXYZ,

FERNDALE, Mich. (FOX 2) - In a case of who rescued who , a 13-year-old Ferndale girl adopted Mr. Mittens from the Ferndale Cat Shelter. But now her bond is turning into thousands of dollars for the shelter.
13-year-old Sydney Hertzberg is a volunteer at the Ferndale Cat Shelter and, since COVID-19 started, she s fostered 19 feral cats and counting.

The win will supply about a year s worth of funding for the shelter.
