ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Starting Thursday, Phoebe Putney Health System will offer the COVID-19 vaccine to those 12 and older.

“Throughout our pandemic response, we have followed guidance from the experts at the FDA, CDC and (Department of Public Health), and we continue to do so. Now, that the science confirms the Pfizer vaccine is safe for adolescents, we are excited to be able to provide protection from the virus to younger southwest Georgians,” said Dr. Dianna Grant, Phoebe Putney Health System chief medical officer.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Two hundred and thirty-nine pounds, the weight of a linebacker. That’s the amount of medication Phoebe Putney Health System collected at its second drug take back event.
Hospital leaders said it’s an opportunity to help curve the national opioid epidemic. Dr. Jason Langer with Phoebe said at their last event in October, Phoebe collected nearly 400 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medication, medical supplies like needles, and even pet medications. ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Georgia is the deadliest state for pregnant women.
The maternal mortality rate is more than twice the national average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The numbers surrounding the issue are staggering, especially, for Black women in Georgia, who by some counts, are six times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications.
The Phoebe Putney Health System launched a program to help curb maternal mortality just last month.

Dennis Kennedy, founder and chairman of the National Diversity Council, praised these companies for their willingness to benchmark their diversity and inclusion efforts following a challenging year. “As businesses recover from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and racial unrest, it is imperative they renew their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to achieve long-term resilience in the marketplace,” Kennedy said. “In 2021, participation in the NDC Index more than doubled and we are thrilled to announce the first company achieving recognition under our Best U.S. Companies for Diversity list.”

“Our COVID-19 numbers remain fairly stable. On one hand, that’s good news. We have far fewer COVID-19 patients in our hospitals than we have had during our surges.
