VOX POPULI: The case for saving Dinosaur day from obscurity : The Asahi Shimbun

April 17 is “Kyoryu no Hi” (Dinosaur day), which I didn t know until recently. On this day in 1923, I learned, American explorer and naturalist Roy Chapman Andrews (1884-1960) set out on an expedition to the Gobi Desert. Blame it on my ignorance, but the name didn t ring a bell then. We specialize in dinosaurs, but even we weren t aware of this anniversary day until a few years ago, said Yoshikazu Noda, 61, a researcher at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. A pioneer fossil hunter, Andrews was apparently one of the role models of the eponymous protagonist of the Indiana Jones series of films.

Fossil may be of one of oldest mammals in Japan

Fossil may be of one of oldest mammals in Japan Japanese researchers believe that a jawbone fossil discovered in Fukui Prefecture in 2019 might be from the earliest mammal to ever live within its shores. Researchers at Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum have analyzed a lower jaw fossil that was unearthed in June, 2019. It was found in the early Cretaceous stratum, which dates back about 127 million years. The jaw has three teeth, each measuring 13.1 millimeters long and 5.8 millimeters high. Researchers suspect that the jawbone belonged to a primitive mammal that was about 16 to 17 centimeters long. Researchers say Japan s earliest currently known mammal fossil was found in the stratum dating back about 130 to 121 million years.
