Stronger northwest winds this afternoon will continue to send smoke and haze from smoldering fire and prescribed fires into areas like Sacramento. The private air monitoring system called Purple Air Is detecting small smoke particles from a number of air sensors hooked up to their network. 8:30 a.m. update:

The blaze ignited Wednesday night in the Fremont Weir State Wildlife Area, which is near Woodland and the Sacramento International Airport. Sign up for our Newsletters The fire has proven difficult for firefighters to deal with and access because of its location. As of early Thursday, it had charred an estimated 500 acres. No homes or structures are threatened. Yolo County noted that fire crews may be doing some back-burning Thursday, so smoke may be visible in the region.
