On 8 December 2020, a small group of scientists in the United Kingdom logged on for a regular Tuesday videoconference about the spread of the pandemic coronavirus. The discussion focused on Kent, a county in southeastern England that was seeing increasing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, even as the rest of the country was managing to curb the spread. Because investigations had not found any obvious causes no big workplace outbreaks or changes in people s behavior several researchers had been asked to look at viral genomes from the region.

DENVER California on Wednesday announced the nation s second confirmed case of the new and apparently more contagious variant of the coronavirus, offering a strong indication that the infection is spreading more widely in the United States.
Fred Hutch researchers are racing to find out whether the new COVID-19 vaccines, which are proven to stop disease symptoms, also block transmission of the virus. If the vaccines are only "symptom-reducing," those who take it might still become infected and possibly contagious. New studies may be needed to find the answers quickly.
