A few sporting events the last few weeks captured my attention.
First, we saw Selmaâs football Bears stage a valiant, gutsy second-half comeback to pull ahead of Kingsburg in the annual rivalry game. Then the Vikings kicker sealed a two-point victory for Kingsburg, 17-15 in the final seconds.
 A day later I watched as Fresno Pacific University, coached by Selma High grad George Rodriguez, lost a 4-3 heart-breaker against Academy of Art from San Francisco in NCAA womenâs tennis.
Both of those outcomes disappointed me because my heart was with the Bears and the Sunbirds for personal reasons. I have coached at Selma High, my daughter graduated from there and in general I have followed Bears sports for many years.Â

Report for America today announced the placements of some 300 journalists for its 2021 reporting corps. The cohort, which includes a number of corps members returning for a second or third year, will join the staffs of more than 200 local news organizations across 49 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam.

About 50 percent of evangelical institutions associated with the Council of Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) have a diversity advocate or someone with a title like “chief diversity officer,” according to CCCU spokeswoman Greta Hays.
GREEN RIVER Green River High School senior Lauren Lee signed her national letter of intent Wednesday to swim for Fresno Pacific University following her high school graduation.
Lee already has seven years of competitive swimming experience and was a crucial member of the 2020 3A state championship team. She is excited to continue her swimming career at the collegiate level in Fresno, California.
Though a good swimming program was important when picking a school to attend, academics were her primary focus when talking with colleges.

“I talked to a lot of colleges with really great education programs and that’s how Fresno Pacific popped up originally. They have an amazing education system, but they also have an amazing swim program that I’m really excited to join,” Lee said.
