More Portlaoise social housing ahead as land dispute ends

Years of disputes over housing land in Portlaoise town has been resolved, opening the way for planned new social houses.
There are about 34 houses to be built on land on the town side of O’Moore Place.
It is part of a multi million Urban Regeneration project for what is one of the oldest council estate in Laois, built over 70 years ago. Already €400,000 has been spent demolishing six houses to add parking and a wider road.
Since 2019 however, the plan by Co-operative Housing and Laois County Council has been stalled over access to the land. The field’s owner had agreed but a title issue was in dispute.

In a circular economy, the state of being waste is temporary. Then it becomes something else. The big furniture companies are on it. Ikea is often first in the firing line for making furniture that is perceived as disposable, but according to its recent sustainability report, it aims to become a “fully circular and climate-positive business by 2030”.
The report specifies four “circular loops”: reuse, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling. Here’s how I understand them. Reuse is when an object is used again, possibly by someone else. Refurbishment is when an object is restored so it is as good as new, and maybe even improved a little.

The housing crisis continues to affect Generation Rent and Generation Stuck at Home, the homeless, and many other groups within the Covid-19 pandemic.
And while the pandemic-related recession has meant increased saving for some high-earners, for many, particularly those in the hardest-hit sectors, their dream of getting a secure home has been pushed further out of reach.
More than 150 new Laois council homes ready by end March

More than 150 tenants and families around Laois will move into new homes by the end of March, despite current Covid-19 Level 5 restrictions.
Construction work on social houses that are almost ready has been classed as essential work by the Government.
It means that work is flying ahead in different estates around Laois, with contractors focusing on the only sites they are allowed to work on at present.
The silver lining is that the keys to 156 brand new warm homes will be handed over to people living on very low incomes and in need of a home next month.
