Swells are easing, snow has cleared, and MetService is
forecasting a string of fine days ahead. New Zealanders will
welcome a sunny weekend. The change is driven by a
high-pressure system that takes charge of Aotearoa’s
weather through weekend and keeps its grip firm until early
next week.
MetService meteorologist Andrew James says
there are a few cold mornings ahead, “This high-pressure
system hangs on for a few days, keeping conditions clear and
calm for most. The cold air that brought the snow earlier in
the week remains over the country too, and with nights
largely cloud-free kiwis should expect a run of chilly

Despite “significant progress” in the fight against
terrorism, the UN counter-terrorismchief warned on
Wednesday that amidst new and more diverse threats, COVID-19
has triggered increased activity throughout many
countries.
Vladimir Voronkov, head of the UNOffice
ofCounter-Terrorism(OCT), concluded the Second
High-level Conferenceof Heads ofCounter-Terrorism,
by summing up four of the strategic challenges facing the
world today.
He underscored the need for “inclusive,
forward-looking, evidence-based approaches to build
resilience”, in the face of the ISIL legacy in Iraq and
Syria; terrorist threats in Africa; tackling transnational
risks sparked by various forms of intolerance; and the need
to upgrade technology and know-how to counter the

work devised by Peter Wilson the founding Director of Little
Dog Barking Theatre. Peter died in March this year but had
always hoped that the talented director Jacqui Coates would
join him one day in realising this show on stage.

Labour supply remains issue for
industry
The kiwifruit industry has successfully
reached the end of its harvest with a record crop now headed
for overseas markets – if not already there.
Harvest
New
Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc. CEO Colin Bond says the
sector weathered the labour crisis that affected the
country’s horticulture sector well – “but that was
down to a combination of good practice and good
fortune.”
Bond says the 2021 season’s domestic
operational practices weren’t disrupted by COVID-19 to the
same extent as last year’s, but continued border closures
meant Working Holiday Visa (WHV) holder numbers were down

There are no cases of COVID-19 to report in the
community in New Zealand today.
There is one case to
report related to recent returnees in managed isolation
facilities since the Ministry’s update
yesterday.
One previously reported case has now
recovered.
Three previously reported cases have now
been reclassified as under investigation pending a
historical classification investigation. These involve a
case from India reported on 26 June, a case from South
Africa and another from India both reported on 28 June.
These cases have now been removed from New Zealand’s
COVID-19 tally.
