NLBMDA asks Congress members to oppose tax increases

NLBMDA asks Congress members to oppose tax increases istock.com/izanbar The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association has sent a letter to the House Committee on Ways and Means and Senate Committee on Finance reiterating its opposition to any new tax increases as Congress and the White House continue to negotiate comprehensive infrastructure legislation. NLBMDA has been on record warning lawmakers against tax increases since early 2021 and this letter articulates that opposition. NLBMDA was encouraged to see that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework recently agreed to by President Biden and members of the U.S. Senate did not include any new tax increases on small businesses. NLBMDA strongly believes that Congress should maintain this position moving forward and reject any new tax increases on job-creators, including increases to the corporate tax rate, pass-through deduction for small business, capital gains tax, estate tax, and others.

Success of ABA Day 2021 is a blueprint for year-round advocacy

Success of ABA Day 2021 is a blueprint for year-round advocacy   Clockwise from top left: ABA President Patricia Lee Refo; Jim Harbaugh, head football coach of the Michigan Wolverines; ABA President-elect Reginald Turner; and Bill Bay, the ABA Day Planning Committee chair and immediate-past chair of the ABA House of Delegates. On April 20 and 21, thousands joined the American Bar Association online during its annual advocacy event, ABA Day, to discuss the need for robust legal aid funding and increased judicial security. While the pandemic restricted our ability to meet face-to-face, the ingenuity and determination of our participants enabled the ABA to host a virtual conference where hundreds of members of the legal profession met with congressional leaders remotely, sent their representative emails or even just called them, while thousands of others across the country communicated on social media about our issues.

Congress nears COVID relief deal

Congress nears COVID relief deal In addition, the deal would likely provide $2 billion in emergency funding for Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund and another round of economic impact payments for consumers. NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler sent a message to association members Wednesday urging their help in securing these industry-supported provisions. Credit unions are encouraged to use NAFCU’s Grassroots Action Center to send messages directly to lawmakers on these issues. Lawmakers are working to finalize the relief provisions so that they could be attached to the federal government funding omnibus bill. Current funding is set to expire at midnight Friday; legislation needs to be passed by both the House and Senate and signed by the president before the deadline to prevent a government shutdown.
