Ateneo opens facilities for staff, students affected by flooding

Ateneo de Manila University (Photo from AdMU) AdMU has opened its facilities in Loyola Heights in Quezon City and its Rockwell campus for Ateneo Professional Schools employees, faculty, and students needing emergency and temporary shelter. Heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Fabian triggered flooding in several areas in the country. As of July 24, around 14,000 residents have been preemptively evacuated as rains continue to dampen parts of Luzon, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) announced that Fabian has already left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but it would still continue to bring rains over Luzon in the next 24 hours.

After the University of the Philippines (UP) released on July 15 the results of its admission application, Leigh Patrick Mamisay shared he also got accepted to Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) , De La Salle University (DLSU), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST). These Philippine universities are dubbed as the “Big 4” as they often make it to world rankings. Leigh Patrick Mamisay Mamisay admitted he never really expected to get accepted to the “Big 4” because of the volume of the students who also applied.

This year’s debate championship was hosted virtually by South Korea. Dianne Ablay from the University of the Philippines Tacloban was named as the Public Speaking Grand champion, while Hans Wong of the De La Salle University won the English-as-a-second language (ESL) Best Speaker award. Charlette Inao and Verse Abellaneda of the University of the Philippines Manila were hailed as Masters Grand champions. Meanwhile, Luigi Alcañeses, David Africa, Mikko Vitug, and Ignacio Villareal from the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) were ranked as the 8th, 7th, 4th, and 3rd Best Open Speakers, respectively.
