New Year Brings New Illinois Laws

The upcoming new year is bringing about a half dozen new laws to Illinois.  One of the most significant is a minimum wage increase.  The minimum wage will go up one dollar to eleven dollars per hour.  One dollar increases will continue each year until the wage hits 15 dollars an hour.  Another important law will limit out-of-pocket expenses for life-saving insulin.  Costs for insulin will be limited to 100 dollars for a 30-day supply, regardless of how much insulin is needed.  Other laws will allow law enforcement to coordinate National Missing and Unidentified Persons System labs and to expand address protection to victims of sexual assault and stalking.

2021: New year, 3 new laws in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - State lawmakers hoped to work on many plans in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic cut their session short. Now, there s only three laws going into effect on Friday. Residents can expect to see a price cap on insulin, stronger protections for survivors of sexual assault, and a new option to help law enforcement with missing person investigations. Gov. JB Pritzker joined Dr. Ngozi Ezike, and many advocates to sign the monumental price cap bill into law on January 24. Any patients under the state s insurance plan needing insulin will only have to pay $100 per month for their prescription. The lead sponsor, Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), emphasized this law could help 1.3 million Illinoisans suffering from diabetes. This also makes Illinois only the second state to cap co-pays for insulin under state insurance.

New laws 2021: Illinois laws that take effect January 1

CHICAGO (WLS) With the start of the New Year, there is always a new set of laws to obey. The year 2020 began with over 250 new state laws - the biggest being the legalization of recreational marijuana, which has paid off big time. We ve had more than a billion dollars in retail sales since it became legal, said David Greising, president of the Better Government Association. But the spring legislative session was abruptly cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result lawmakers only passed a handful new laws to take effect in the coming year. With the lack of so many new laws in 2020, there is likely to be pent up demand for new legislation in 2021, especially when it comes to issues surrounding ethics and equity.

New Law Aims To Improve Pursuit Of Missing Persons Cases

Originally published on December 30, 2020 9:47 am A new state law taking effect in January will make it easier for police to connect unidentified bodies to missing persons cases. House Bill 2708 will require law enforcement to collect certain types of evidence such as DNA samples from remains they find. These will then be entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System federal database. Captain Abigail Keller, Zone 6 Commander, Illinois State Police, said this in turn will help missing persons investigations. “It’s also going to allow us to enter that same kind of data, the DNA, the fingerprints, the X-rays, into the NamUs repository so that it can be cross-referenced with those unidentified human remains cases for potential matches, she said.
